A normal ultrasound measurement is not a single universal number. Plane, respiration, age, height, sex, and caliper location can change the result. The report should preserve the technique and patient context. A borderline value alone is not enough to diagnose organ enlargement or duct dilatation.
Common measurements include craniocaudal liver length, common bile duct caliber, splenic long axis, renal length, and aortic diameter. Bile duct caliber varies with age and cholecystectomy status. Renal length varies with body size and chronic disease. Comparison is strongest when prior measurements used the same plane.
